MAKE FATHERS DAY SPECIAL WITH A FISHING EXCURSIONS!
STURGEON:
With the Fraser in freshet the river has risen dramatically and should come up a little more yet. Despite the high water the fishing has been excellent as there has been very little pressure on the fish and the initial blast of heavy debris has calmed down somewhat. Please keep in mind that three of the spawning channels are now closed to sturgeon fishing (May 15) these are Jesperson’s Side Channel, Herrling Island Side Channel and Seabird Island North Side Channel. Please see map below and check the BC Freshwater Fishing Regulations for more details.
With the Frasers waters up we find the Fraser Canyon sturgeon season in full swing! It is in this higher water that canyon truly shines and provides some of the finest sturgeon to be had on the planet. In fact the fishing has been ultra-steady with good numbers of above average fish coming on every outing thus far. If you are thinking of running this special piece of water keep in mind that is very “heavy” water and not for the timid or unexperienced jet boater. Please be very careful!! The canyon is a high water fishery and the sturgeon haunts are not always obvious as the water levels tend to hide the really good spots. MID FRASER STURGEON:
With the waters levels up and warming from the spring freshet, most fish have moved into shallower depths than they we’re in the late winter. This spring movement will typically spread the fish out somewhat and one is best served to keep moving trying different anchor drops, remember moving 30 feet can sometimes make the difference. Rule of thumb: if you haven’t had a bite in 30 to 45 minutes pick up the anchor and move, at least a little.
The annual Eulachon run has come to an end and although some are still seeing success with this oily baitfish its time to start using different baits. Try lamprey, coarse fish, single salmon eggs , roe and maybe even a little salmon meat. At this time of year the fish tend to be on the prowl and although some baits will outperform others the fish will tend to be more opportunistic.
Obviously there can be allot of debris coming down and fishing lines need to be cleaned more often, at least every 20 minutes to make sure that the bait is not covered up. With the Fraser in full freshet the visibility in the water is almost zero. Be ultra-vigilant when boating the river as there are many rock bars that are just submersed at the moment. Also keep in mind that with the rising water comes larger debris as well and it is wise to keep an eye up stream of your anchor location for logs that could potentially wreak havoc on you anchor line.
With this high water it can be challenging to bring a large fish to shore since the water levels are most likely in the tree line. Larger fish should never be brought into the boat as the structure of their bodies is not designed to support their weight once out of the water. If getting out of the boat and into shallow water with the fish is not option then anglers need to boat side release the fish or perhaps invest in a side mounted sling cradle to aid in the release. Remember that sturgeon were designed to swim forward and should never be towed by the tail, this will drown them. Everyone of these amazing creatures are special and we need to do our part to ensure that the stocks remain strong for future generations.

PITT RIVER TROUT FISHING
The recent cooler weather has dropped the water levels on the Pitt and the river is low and clear. However with the weatherman promising warmer weather we are looking forward to some epic days to come. Because the Pitt is glacier fed, water levels fluctuate with any warm weather bumping the river up and cool days bringing it down fast. Keep in mind it takes a whole lot of rain to even move the river level a little at this time of year, in fact, rain typically means the river will be on the drop. If you are interested in trying out this river for the first time it is boat access only and the river can be treacherous to run for a novice jet boater, be careful and play safe.

2025 is an odd numbered year which means we will have a return of Pink Salmon this August through September! These salmon show up on mass every other year and not only are they superb sport themselves but the wily sturgeon love to eat them making for some fantastic fishing fun. Pinks Salmon returns are currently forecasted to reach an astounding 30 Million in the Fraser system!! In fact all the salmon estimations are looking very promising and we are starting to see ALL FALL dates filling up fast.
