Hi There! and welcome to the GRFA fishing report updated on the 8th of September 2026.
Fall is right around the corner, and as the days shorten it’s a great time of year to be enjoying the great outdoors; and what better way than chasing finned fish with rod and reel. Here’s what’s going on…
SALMON:
The fall salmon fisheries are looking to be OFF THE HOOK this year! In particular, the Coho and Chinook numbers poised to make their spawning runs at the mouth of the Fraser River are looking outstanding.
Right now, saltwater anglers are making the most of the opportunity, and we’ve been hearing reports that the fishing has been some of the best in decades. This bodes extremely well for us, as these fish will soon be making their way into our area and if current indications are anything to go by, we could be in for a spectacular fall fishery.
In fact, some fish are already here. Savvy anglers have reported getting into a few Coho and Chinook around the mouth of the Vedder River while working spoons and spinners.
Look for the Coho and Chinook fishing to continue improving as we move through September and into October.
As for Chum, it’s still a bit of a question mark. DFO doesn’t appear to have a reliable way of forecasting these fish, so we’ll have to wait and see what October brings. Traditionally, Chum begin entering the freshwater around that time, and hopefully they follow the same positive trend we’re seeing with Coho and Chinook.

STURGEON:
The Fraser River has dropped dramatically over the last few weeks, and with fall approaching, the sturgeon fishing has been fantastic.
Water that was simply too fast to fish a few weeks ago is now slowing down and becoming increasingly productive. At the same time, some of the holes that were producing well earlier in the season are beginning to slow down, literally. As the river drops, the fish are moving into areas with enough current to provide them with the comfort and food they need.
With the dropping water levels, numerous gravel bars have appeared above the mouth of the Vedder River. Use extra caution when navigating the river, particularly if operating a propeller driven boat.
The fish are being found in all kinds of water right now, and you really need to move around to locate the schools. Sometimes 100 feet can be the difference between hooking a fish and staring at your rods all day.
Depths from 10 to 40 feet have been producing, so don’t be afraid to experiment.
One thing to remember: these sturgeon have been feasting on sockeye and are getting pretty full! Many fish are absolutely bulging with salmon in their bellies, and they may “play” with your bait for a while before finally committing.
THE FRASER CANYON continues to produce outstanding numbers of sturgeon along with exceptional sized fish.
Water levels are dropping quickly, opening up more productive water, and the fishing has remained incredibly consistent. We continue to see above average fish coming on virtually every charter.
If you’re considering fishing this incredible stretch of river, remember that the Fraser Canyon is powerful water and is not for inexperienced jet boat operators. Exercise extreme caution and make sure you’re with an experienced operator who knows the river.
If you’ve always wanted to target the biggest sturgeon in one of the most breathtaking fisheries on earth, our Ultimate Fraser Canyon Sturgeon Trips offer a truly unforgettable experience.

LOOKING FORWARD TO 2027! WINTER & SPRING
The Lillooet River is a gem of a winter fishery for Bull Trout and also offers opportunities at Steelhead, Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout.
This is one of our premier trips, and once you experience it, you’ll understand why.
The Lillooet is a remote fishery that receives very little fishing pressure and requires a skilled jet boat operator to reach the best water. The combination of sheer beauty, majestic scenery and miles of perfect fishing water makes this one of those true bucket list rivers.
Why leave it on your bucket list? Come get it done! info@greatriverfishing.com
Once again, we’ll be offering our River Raft Float Adventures on the Vedder/Chilliwack River this winter in pursuit of the elusive Steelhead!
These trips are designed to enhance the fishing experience and provide access to water that can be difficult to reach any other way.
Our raft adventures will begin February 1st and run through the end of April.
Want to knock Old Squaretail off your bucket list? This is your opportunity!
Steelhead will begin entering the Vedder around the middle of December and are typically present in catchable numbers by the first week of January. The peak of the run is generally toward the end of February, with good fishing often continuing well into April.
We’ll primarily be float and/or fly fishing for these chrome beauties, using the raft to provide easier access to the river. Most of the actual fishing will still be done from shore.
For anglers with limited time or those simply wanting to learn the ins and outs of steelheading we’ll also be offering Walk & Wade opportunities..
If Steelhead are on your bucket list, or you’d like to learn more about these exciting winter opportunities, drop us an email for more information.
