Hi There and welcome to the GRFA fishing report updated on the 19th of May 2026.
Feels like summer has officially arrived!! What an unbelievable spring we’re having. With these summer like conditions, it’s hard to imagine anyone not wanting to get out on the water and soak it all in.
And with Father’s Day only a month away, now’s the time to start planning Dad’s fishing adventure with the family! A guided fishing trip creates memories that last a lifetime, big fish, big laughs, and time well spent together on the river. Drop us a line and we’ll get you hooked up! info@greatriverfishing.com
Now onto what’s happening on our rivers…
UPPER PITT RIVER: REMOTE WILDERNESS FISHING
The Pitt River is just entering freshet and the BIG Bulls are on their way! We’ve already made our first run up the river and conditions are looking absolutely fantastic. There are plenty of new and improved runs and holding water this year, and we’re fired up to see what this season brings.
Starting later this month, we’ll once again be offering trips into this legendary fishery. The Upper Pitt remains one of the most sought-after fishing destinations in the province, and for good reason. This incredible Bull Trout fishery fishes well through mid-August, but year after year the absolute best action consistently happens during freshet. Why? Nobody really knows, but the numbers never lie. Bigger fish. More fish. Incredible action.
Our Great River Fishing Adventures guides have spent years mastering the Upper Pitt watershed and know exactly how to target these fish effectively. Because access requires jet boats and experienced boat handling skills, angling pressure remains extremely light. Translation? You’ll experience untouched water, incredible scenery, and true wilderness fishing without the crowds.
Best of all, this world-class adventure is only a day trip from Vancouver.

STURGEON:
With the province experiencing an early blast of warm weather, Fraser River levels have climbed quickly and the system is now in full freshet from snow runoff. These are the exact conditions where Fraser Canyon sturgeon fishing absolutely shines.
And the fishing lately has been lights out.
We’ve been seeing consistent action with impressive numbers of above-average fish coming to the boat on nearly every outing. The canyon is truly a high-water fishery, and during freshet the best sturgeon water often hides in plain sight beneath the heavy flows.
If you’ve ever wanted to battle the biggest freshwater fish in North America in one of the most spectacular river settings on earth, this is your opportunity. Our Ultimate Fraser Canyon Sturgeon Trips are already producing, and we’d love to help set up an unforgettable adventure for you. info@greatriverfishing.com
As water temperatures and river levels continue to rise, fish are transitioning into shallower holding water compared to late winter patterns. This time of year, mobility is key. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different anchor drops — sometimes moving only 30 feet can completely change the action.
Good rule of thumb: if you haven’t had a bite in 45 minutes, pull anchor and make a move!
The annual Eulachon run has now wrapped up, and while some anglers are still finding success using these oily baitfish, it’s time to start mixing things up. Lamprey, coarse fish, single salmon eggs, roe, and even chunks of salmon meat can all produce excellent results right now. Spring sturgeon are actively feeding and opportunistic, so variety can pay off in a big way.
One final reminder: with the Fraser now in full freshet, visibility is extremely low and river conditions can change quickly. Please stay alert while boating, as many rock bars are just barely submerged. Rising water also means increased debris, so always keep an eye upstream for floating logs and debris that can quickly create dangerous situations around anchor lines.

IMPORTANT! Support the Canadian ownership, Public Right to Fish and Priority Access to Salmon
We would like to take a moment to discuss a federal policy change that will undermine sportfishing in BC. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) is under pressure to eliminate the principle of Common Property Resource from its Salmon Allocation Policy. Removing this principle from the policy would represent a radical shift that could undermine the rights of Canadians, create uncertainty around the ownership of a common property resource, and disrupt the effective management of the salmon fishery.
ARE YOU CANADIAN? DO YOU BELIEVE THAT:
- Salmon are a Common Property Resource belonging to all Canadians
- Salmon must be referred to as a Common Property Resource in the Salmon Allocation Policy
- The Public Right to Fish must be referred to in the Salmon Allocation Policy
- Recreational sector priority access to Chinook and Coho must be maintained after conservation and before the commercia! sector
….THEN PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION! and SHARE, SHARE, SHARE!
What else can you do?
Reach out to your local MPs – call them, stop in, speak to them, and write emails. Also, call or email the Federal Fisheries Minister, the Honourable Joanne Thompson, and let her know this is NOT how we want her to manage OUR Canadian Common Property Resource. Ask her to keep the SAP as status quo, and just add the IRB fishery (Indigenous Rights-Based) right underneath the FSC fishery (Food, Social, Ceremonial) in the ranking within the policy AND leave the rest the same.
…remember #wefish #wehunt #WEVOTE
GRFA would like to announce that we have purchased a NEW boat strictly for touring the river. This behemoth 26 footer is powered by twin inboards and can take on 22 passengers. Starting middle of May, these private, scenic and historical tours typically will last around 2.5 hours and are fantastic for corporate and large groups looking for a unique experience.
