Now onto what’s happening on our rivers…

UPPER PITT RIVER: REMOTE WILDERNESS FISHING

June typically marks the annual start of the Pitt River bull trout fishery. The river has been on the low side and exceptionally clear. With daylight stretching well into the evening, any stretch of warm weather should bring the water levels up and add some much-needed colour to the system. As the river rises, bull trout begin moving in aggressively to feed on salmon fry throughout the watershed.

The biggest bull trout of the season are often caught through June and into early July. Fly fishing remains the preferred method for most anglers, with fast sink tips and streamer patterns in a variety of colour schemes producing excellent results. That said, the classic spoon-and-spin combination has also been extremely effective.

This is one of the most exciting times of year to experience the Pitt River, whether you’re a seasoned angler or looking to explore one of British Columbia’s premier wilderness fisheries for the first time. Our guided Pitt River trips provide access to remote water, expert local knowledge, and an unforgettable day on the river.

Keep in mind there is still a chance of hooking a late-season steelhead in early June. If you happen to encounter one of these special fish, please handle it carefully to ensure it can successfully return to spawn again.

If you’re planning to run your own jet boat up the Pitt River, remember this is a shallow-water fishery and not the place for inexperienced operators. The river has changed dramatically since last season and will continue to shift throughout the summer. This is remote country, and help can be a long way away if problems arise.

Our Great River Fishing Adventures guides have spent years mastering the Upper Pitt watershed and know exactly how to target these fish effectively. Because access requires jet boats and experienced boat handling skills, angling pressure remains extremely light. Translation? You’ll experience untouched water, incredible scenery, and true wilderness fishing without the crowds.

Best of all, this world-class adventure is only a day trip from Vancouver.

STURGEON:

Water levels on the Fraser River remain high, and we expect them to stay elevated until early July. The northern snowpack, which has the greatest influence on Fraser conditions, is slightly above average this year. Debris levels have calmed somewhat recently, though another push of debris is expected as temperatures dictate snowmelt patterns. A string of warm days in the Interior will raise water levels quickly, while cooler weather will slow the rise.

Not to worry though, GRFA guides are highly experienced in high-water conditions and are true experts when it comes to safely navigating the river and creating meaningful experiences for guests every day.

As water levels rise and temperatures warm during the spring freshet, most fish have moved into shallower water compared to late winter patterns. This seasonal movement tends to spread fish out, making mobility important. Often, moving your anchor just 30 feet can make all the difference. As a general rule, if you haven’t had a bite within 45 minutes, it’s time to pull anchor and try another spot.

The annual eulachon run has now come to an end. While some anglers are still finding success using this oily baitfish, it’s time to start experimenting with different offerings. Lamprey, coarse fish, single salmon eggs, roe, and salmon meat can all produce excellent results. At this time of year, sturgeon tend to feed opportunistically, so staying versatile can pay off.

For anglers looking to experience world-class Fraser River sturgeon fishing, the coming weeks traditionally offer some of the season’s most consistent action. With warmer water temperatures and active fish, this is an outstanding time to get out on the river with family, friends, or clients.

Please remember that three spawning channels are now closed to sturgeon fishing until August 1: Jesperson’s Side Channel, Herrling Island Side Channel, and the Seabird Island North Side Channel. Be sure to check the BC Freshwater Fishing Regulations for complete details before heading out.

With the Fraser in full freshet, underwater visibility is nearly zero. Please remain ultra-vigilant while boating, as many rock bars are currently just below the surface. Rising water levels also mean increased debris, so it’s important to keep a constant eye upstream of your anchor location for logs and other hazards that could create dangerous situations.

With Fraser River levels on the rise, we now find ourselves entering the highly anticipated Fraser Canyon sturgeon season. High water is when the canyon truly shines, producing some of the finest sturgeon fishing on the planet. Fishing has already been exceptionally steady, with strong numbers of above-average fish being landed on nearly every outing so far.

If you’re considering running this incredible stretch of river on your own, keep in mind the canyon is extremely powerful water and not suited for timid or inexperienced jet boat operators. The best holding water is often hidden during high water conditions, making local knowledge critical.

For anglers looking to target the biggest of the big in one of the most spectacular fishing destinations in the world, our Ultimate Fraser Canyon Sturgeon Trips deliver a truly unforgettable experience. If you’d like to plan your adventure, drop us a line at info@greatriverfishing.com and we’ll help organize the trip of a lifetime.

IMPORTANT! Support the Canadian ownership, Public Right to Fish and Priority Access to Salmon

We would like to take a moment to discuss a federal policy change that will undermine sportfishing in BC. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) is under pressure to eliminate the principle of Common Property Resource from its Salmon Allocation Policy. Removing this principle from the policy would represent a radical shift that could undermine the rights of Canadians, create uncertainty around the ownership of a common property resource, and disrupt the effective management of the salmon fishery.

ARE YOU CANADIAN? DO YOU BELIEVE THAT:

  • Salmon are a Common Property Resource belonging to all Canadians
  • Salmon must be referred to as a Common Property Resource in the Salmon Allocation Policy
  • The Public Right to Fish must be referred to in the Salmon Allocation Policy
  • Recreational sector priority access to Chinook and Coho must be maintained after conservation and before the commercia! sector

….THEN PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION! and SHARE, SHARE, SHARE!

What else can you do?

Reach out to your local MPs – call them, stop in, speak to them, and write emails. Also, call or email the Federal Fisheries Minister, the Honourable Joanne Thompson, and let her know this is NOT how we want her to manage OUR Canadian Common Property Resource. Ask her to keep the SAP as status quo, and just add the IRB fishery (Indigenous Rights-Based) right underneath the FSC fishery (Food, Social, Ceremonial) in the ranking within the policy AND leave the rest the same.

…remember #wefish #wehunt #WEVOTE
