Hi Subscriber and welcome to the GRFA fishing report updated on the 30th of July 2025.
The weather continues to be incredible up the Fraser Valley. Warm days, great company and BIG fish, this is what we live for. Anyone heading out on the water these days better not forget the sun screen lotion and some cool drinks it’s been hot… and so has the fishing.
First some good news… Salmon returns are much higher than anticipated! The early Stuart Sockeye runs are nearly 5 times more than DFO predicted with an astounding 500K+ expected to reach the spawning grounds. This trend seams to be crossing over into all the different salmon species and we are getting excited as we draw ever closer to a salmon opening.
Pink salmon will start to enter the river towards the end of August and currently the predicted numbers are amazing with 30 Million fish being the low side with a potential of 40+ Million! With numbers higher than anticipated on Sockeye, Chinook and Pinks, we are hopeful to see an opening towards the end of August for the Fraser River. We will keep you posted on this as Dean is the co-chair for the Sportfish Advisory Board which is the official process to work with DFO over the last 60 years.
Please keep in mind that with the abundance of salmon this season that there will be First Nations FSC (Food, Social and Ceremonial) openings starting the first few weeks of August and will run into the beginning of September. Please be considerate and respectful during these openings, it is paramount that good relations between the First Nations and sportfishing communities remain intact. This is for the good of all and ensures a lasting resource for everyone to enjoy.
On another note. GRFA is proud to host the 9th annual 2025 Jurassic Classic Sturgeon Fundraiser August 22-24. Through the efforts of the Wild Sheep Society of BC, the Guide Outfitters Association of BC, and the North America Wild Sheep Foundation, this remarkable event raises awareness and vital funding for the conservation of wild sheep in BC. This year promises to be exceptional, with favorable weather, ideal water conditions, and a wonderful gathering of like minded individuals supporting a meaningful cause. Over two days of thrilling sturgeon fishing, paired with evening banquets and barbecues, this event celebrates camaraderie while contributing to the preservation of wild sheep on our mountains. We extend a warm welcome to all participants, volunteers, and sponsors and wish everyone the best of luck and a successful weekend.
Now here’s what’s happening on our rivers…
STURGEON:
With the Frasers water levels dropping through July, the last few weeks have seen an incredible number of big fish! The big boys are definitely feeding, and the water temperatures are ideal for epic battles. It’s rare to catch a sturgeon that doesn’t leap out of the water, in fact most fish are jumping repeatedly, and their runs are blistering. It’s definitely time for some “hog” hunting, but make sure to have a few people on board to rotate on the rods. Once one of these giants is hooked, it’s uncommon for the initial angler to finish the fight alone, and most require being chased with the boat.
The Fraser is still dropping, but not at the rapid rate of a week ago and has leveled off somewhat. Water that was too fast to fish a few weeks ago is now slowing and becoming more manageable. As the water continues to drop, more fishing grounds open up, and the “holes” are getting larger and more fishable. Anglers should keep moving around since the fish will spread out with the increasing slack water. Even 100 feet can make a difference. Be cautious as gravel bars start appearing, especially if you’re running a prop-driven boat.
The river is also seeing a good number of salmon, and the sturgeon are beginning to shift their focus to salmon parts and roe. However, don’t neglect the reliable summer baits like lampreys, dew worms, and coarse fish, as each day can bring something different.
The Fraser Canyon Ultimate Sturgeon Experience continues to deliver unforgettable moments for our “Big Game” clients seeking a once in a lifetime adventure. The past few weeks have brought incredible numbers of fish, including some legendary “monsters” brought to shore. The river keeps dropping daily, and the rising water temperature is making these fish even more active. If you’re interested in trying your hand at biggest of the big in one of the most spectacular venue’s in the world drop us a line and we’ll be more than happy to help organize one of our Ultimate Fraser Canyon Sturgeon trips with you. info@greatriverfishing.com

UPPER PITT RIVER:
The river has been running low, making it challenging for jet boats. Since the Pitt is glacier-fed, its water levels fluctuate with warm weather causing a rise and cooler days bringing it down quickly. If you’re considering trying this river for the first time, remember that it is boat access only, and the river can be dangerous for inexperienced jet boaters, especially in current conditions.
Fishing has been day to day, with new groups of fish arriving every few days. The fish are scattered, so staying on the move has been most effective. Fly fishing is the preferred method for most anglers, with fast sink tips and leech-style streamer patterns in various colors being the go-to choice. Spin fishing with spoons has also been highly effective, particularly using Crocs in the ¼ to 3/8 ounce range.
Great River Fishing Adventures guides have many years’ experience fishing the Upper Pitt River watershed and are knowledgeable about the area and effective techniques to target all species. As Jet Boats and experienced boat handling skills are required to access and fish this river, you rarely see other anglers, and more importantly this area is not over fished. It is truly an adventure that is easily accessible within a day from Vancouver. For a free personalized quote please drop us an email at info@greatriverfishing.com
