Summer is here! Warm days, great company, and BIG fish, this is what we live for. If you’re heading out on the water, don’t forget the sunscreen and plenty of cold drinks because it’s shaping up to be a hot one. Here’s what’s happening on the water this week.
WE ARE READY TO TOUR!! GRFA would like to announce that we have a NEW boat strictly for touring the river. This behemoth 28 footer is powered by twin inboards and can take on 22 passengers. From eagle watching to canyon crawling. STURGEON:
The Fraser River has dropped nearly four feet thanks to the recent cooler weather throughout the Interior and Northern BC. The falling water has made for some excellent fishing for the dinosaurs of the deep. While we don’t believe the freshet is completely over just yet, we also don’t expect any major surges in water levels. Expect the river to fluctuate over the next few weeks before beginning its steady decline through the middle of the month.
As water levels continue to fall, more productive fishing grounds are opening up. The deeper “holes” are becoming larger and more accessible, allowing fish to spread out into newly created slack water areas. The key for anglers right now is to stay mobile even moving 100 feet can make a huge difference. With dropping water comes emerging gravel bars, so boaters, especially those running prop driven boats, should use extra caution when navigating the river.
Most actively feeding sturgeon are currently holding in water less than 30 feet deep. Coarse fish and lamprey continue to be the most productive baits. As river levels drop, sturgeon become increasingly active, moving throughout the system in search of food. The challenge isn’t getting them to bite, it’s finding them. Once you do, hang on! Fish have been making blistering runs and launching into spectacular jumps.
The Fraser Canyon has also been producing exceptional fishing recently, with several truly giant sturgeon landed. If you’re considering fishing this incredible stretch of river, remember that it’s powerful water and should only be attempted by experienced jet boat operators. Please use caution.
The Fraser Canyon is a high water fishery, and many of the best holding areas aren’t obvious because higher water hides the prime structure. Massive boulders and underwater crevices can easily claim anchors and tackle, so if you’re uncertain about a spot, it’s often best to move on rather than risk getting hung up.

UPPER PITT RIVER: REMOTE WILDERNESS FISHING
The Upper Pitt has been on a roller coaster this summer, with water levels constantly changing as temperatures rise and fall. Being glacier fed, warm weather quickly pushes the river higher, while cooler days bring it back down just as fast.
Interestingly, it takes a tremendous amount of rain to significantly affect river levels this time of year. In fact, rainfall often signals that the river will begin dropping. Rain can also add just enough colour to the water to improve fishing conditions over crystal clear water.
Fish have been somewhat scattered, making it important to cover water and stay on the move. Fly anglers continue to have the most success using fast sink tips paired with leech style streamers in a variety of colours. As a general rule, use smaller patterns when the water is clear and switch to larger, more robust flies when the river carries more colour.
If you’re planning your first trip to the Upper Pitt, remember that access is by boat only. Running this river safely requires experience behind the wheel of a jet boat, as conditions can be unforgiving. The river has changed dramatically since last season and will continue to evolve throughout the summer. This is true wilderness, where assistance can be a long way away, so always put safety first.

We would like to take a moment and talk about what we’re in store for this summer. Last year we were blessed with an abnormal amount of Sockeye Salmon returning in the month of August. This allowed for a surprise sport angling opportunity on the Fraser River… Well this year is the 4 year high in the Sockeye cycle and current projections are upwards of 15 million fish!!! This should once again allow for a sport fishing opportunity and most likely we will be open towards the end of August and into September. We are super excited about this and are already starting to see anglers that are in the know booking dates in anticipation. IMPORTANT! Support the Canadian ownership, Public Right to Fish and Priority Access to Salmon
We would like to take a moment to discuss a federal policy change that will undermine sportfishing in BC. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) is under pressure to eliminate the principle of Common Property Resource from its Salmon Allocation Policy. Removing this principle from the policy would represent a radical shift that could undermine the rights of Canadians, create uncertainty around the ownership of a common property resource, and disrupt the effective management of the salmon fishery.
ARE YOU CANADIAN? DO YOU BELIEVE THAT:
- Salmon are a Common Property Resource belonging to all Canadians
- Salmon must be referred to as a Common Property Resource in the Salmon Allocation Policy
- The Public Right to Fish must be referred to in the Salmon Allocation Policy
- Recreational sector priority access to Chinook and Coho must be maintained after conservation and before the commercia! sector

What else can you do?
Reach out to your local MPs, call them, stop in, speak to them, and write emails. Also, call or email the Federal Fisheries Minister, the Honourable Joanne Thompson, and let her know this is NOT how we want her to manage OUR Canadian Common Property Resource. Ask her to keep the SAP as status quo, and just add the IRB fishery (Indigenous Rights Based) right underneath the FSC fishery (Food, Social, Ceremonial) in the ranking within the policy AND leave the rest the same.
